Although most of the movies are considered as stuff for entertainment, sometimes, you find great nuggets of wisdom contained within even the most mundane of the dialogues. For example, one of my favourites is from the movie Spiderman –
“With great power comes great responsibility.”
Listed below are 10 great words of wisdom from iconic as well as lesser-known movies. Usually what you learn from these quotes depends on you but there is timeless wisdom in these quotes.
1. “Do or do not. There is no try.”
This is one of the most quoted quotes from Star Wars, spoken by Yoda. Yoda is a Jedi Master full of cosmic wisdom. The meaning of this quote is either you are committed or you are not committed. When you want to succeed in something don’t say that you may succeed or you may not succeed because this creates ambiguity. Either you do it or you don’t do it.
A similar suggestion can be found in the original Karate Kid. When the master asks the karate kid whether he is ready to learn or not the kid says, “I guess so.”
The master uses the example of working on the road. If you walk on the right side or on the left side you remain safe, but if you walk in the middle of the road, you get squished like a grape.
This quote from Star Wars teaches you to take firm decisions and then to stick to those decisions.
2. “I figure life’s a gift and I don’t intend on wasting it. You don’t know what hand you’re gonna get dealt next. You learn to take life as it comes at you… to make each day count.”
Jack Dawson, the character played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the Titanic says this.
We often come across the phrase that life is a gift, but do we ever take it seriously? We don’t even realize that we are breathing constantly but let the ability to breathe be taken away even for a few seconds and it can turn into a matter of life and death. So, every breath that you take, is another chance for you to live.
Whether you want to do something with your life or you don’t want to do something is totally up to you, but if you want to do something than every day is a gift. Make the most of it. Life is full of unpredictable twists and turns. The time and the opportunities that you have right now with you may not be there tomorrow. Make full use of them.
3. “Great men are not born great, they grow great.”
By Mario Puzo in The Godfather.
This is the central theme of many of my blog posts and my lectures. Nobody is born great. Our actions to circumstances make us great. It’s how we take decisions and then stick to them. It’s how we stick to our values. It’s how we react or choose to react when confronted with adversity and enticement. Greatness is not inherent although certain characteristics might be. Greatness can always be nurtured if you have the desire to be great.
4. “Don’t ever let somebody tell you you can’t do something, not even me. Alright? You dream, you gotta protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want something, go get it. Period.”
Chris Gardner, played by Will Smith in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness.
You know how lucky you are if you have a dream? Stop anybody on the road and ask him, do you have a dream? You will normally draw a blank. Very few people have a dream or think of having a dream.
